This week on Talk Sex With Dick, NYC Sex Therapist Dr. Richard Mills has an in-depth conversation with Allison Joy Phillips who is pregnant and discusses circumcision.
Sitting on the floor with her legs crossed Indian style, Allison looks like she’s about to pop — rubbing her stomach, she smiles and sips on a cup of green tea. We spoke a few months ago about having her come on the show to discuss sexual freedom and yoga practices, but conversations about circumcision seemed much more important.
Her laughter continued to fill the room, as we made jokes about her husband Todd, whom I refer as “hottie Toodie” throughout this interview. As we dive deeper into the interview, it’s clear that Allison has done some in-depth research about circumcision. She arrived with a plethora of resources and began citing statistics about the rate at which different countries circumcise infants – the United States being one of the top participators of this practice.
It was clear she came prepared, as she unleashed the dark history of Dr. John Kellogg (the same person who invented cornflakes) who advocated for circumcision and even female genital mutilation, that was believed to later deter masturbation.
While in her second trimester the conversations were beginning to stir in her household, which she made clear that before the interview she was unaware about the depth of circumcision, however, has made the decision not to circumcise her son after he is born.
Throughout this episode we discussed deeper meanings of circumcision, what it means to be uncircumcised, the difference between turtles (those who are intact) and snakes (those who’ve been circumcised), and how she’ll have conversations with her son when he begins to question why he isn’t circumcised.
